Going Green in 2011

Picture

I wanted to get a head start on a personal new years resolution to find easy and fun ways to be green and lighten my footprint in my personal life and in my business.  To start I’ve decided stop using plastic bags for lunches at work and school.  These bags are so much fun to sew that I thought I'd share a set for giveaway day.  Very little fabric is required to make a snack bags  which means these are a great way to use scraps from larger sewing project.

The set of two snack bags pictured is what up for grabs to one lucky winner.  To win these bags simply leave a comment here any time before 9pm on December 17, 2010 sharing the ways in which you are green.  I will use a random number generator to select the winner and mail your snack bags on Monday December 20th.  I do ship internationally.

Details: Both bags are made from African cotton and feature dark blue teardrop shapes on a yellow background. Each bag closes with Velcro and is lined with rip-stop nylon and has a gusseted bottom so they stand up on their own. Each bag is 4 inches tall and 6.5 inches wide.

What beautiful and practical bags.

I like to be green by always using reusable shopping bags, buying in bulk so there's less packaging waste and the most time consuming but rewarding of all.. growing our own veggies and preserving and eating the resulting produce.

Y'know, i have been meaning to make some lunch bags for ages. I use tins most of the time. the ways i am green? I upcycle, recycle, re-use and re-shape. I worked mostly pro-bono as activist and organiser for environmental and social justice work i felt passionate about for 15 years. I use my car as little as i can. I only learnt to drive when pregnant at age 36 for green reasons. We compost, grow herbs and veges year round, speak up on issues i feel are important ..you know i have been talking and trying to live more sustainably for years (off the grid and on land for awhile there) .. and there are always ways to improve, so thanks for the opportunity to reflect on that. Tomorrow: off to check out that organic bulk foods co-op...

I have been wanting to make some of these but haven't come across the right kind of fabric. The ways I am green are many...We have an enormous garden, compost, walk or bike most places, don't use paper towels, and try to avoid plastic. We also cook all of our own meals, eating a lot of homemade Asian foods, especially those that use dried beans. And this year we are making all of our Christmas presents by hand...for all 14 family members!

I try to be 'green' whenever I can. For the last two years, I've had a rule that I'm not allowed to buy new clothes - I have to either make them myself from my (massive!) fabric stash, or get second-hand ones, or alter garments I already own. It's surprisingly easy to do, actually! :-)

Those are neat! And I love the idea behind this giveaway and everyone's comments.
I try to be green anywhere I can. I usually take the bike or walk (or public transport if the weather's really horrible), and I try to buy local organic produce whenever I can. I also recycle and use reusable shopping bags, but I don't have a reusable snack bag, so these would be very cool.

I go green by bringing in such items as Cereal boxes and such to use in my classroom as manipulatives. For example, for my student's math bell-ringer one day I told him he needed to calculate how many pieces of cereal did I eat if I had eaten to servings. Reusing such materials help the students learn, and help our environment! Thanks for this green giveaway -- I hope I win! Merry Christmas! God bless :)

I have been composting, hanging out clothes on clothesline, recycling all plastic material, making cloth napkins to use instead of paper, I could go on and on

LOVE these!
We use cloth diapers for our son and don't own a car (we are keen cyclists, baby boy and all).

I love these. I go green by reusing all my brown paper bags. Just wrapped some gifts with one bag. : )

These are great snack bags! At the moment I use glass dishes for my lunches and these would be a lot lighter. I do my best to live a green lifestyle, we use reuseable bags, buy secondhand, I turn worn-out clothes into new things, we use very few paper products, we grow our own food and eat local what we don't grow, and we have dreams of building with straw bales and living off-grid powered by wind and sun, but we haven't quite got there yet!

what an amazing coincidence, just now i was talking to a friend about how many years ago when i was just a teenager i went from door to door trying to make people separate their garbage and reduce the use of plstic bags, and now ll these years later it has finally become a habit for most people. other things i do is try to save water with short showers and using the water from the showers in the toilet flush, using only economical lights and never leaving them on when not needed. so many simple things we can do and they do really make a difference!

how are we green? Hm. We recycle, we compost, we buy locally where we can, and we either use reusable baggies or we wash and wash and wash our snack bags. We also don't eat beef or pork. I would LOVE to be a short shower person, but it is my second biggest eco-sin after my minivan.

Love the bags. We've just switched from paper plates at every meal to washing dishes more often. Hmmm....

I recycle everything we use instead of putting it in the trash, and I have been using cloth produce bags and grocery bags for almost 20 years. I do love the idea of snack bags. Happy Holidays.
